Throw Clay Studio
Adult casual wheel-throwing class - Thursday July 9 (evening class)
Adult casual wheel-throwing class - Thursday July 9 (evening class)
Thursday July 9, 6pm to 8:30pm
Absolute beginners very welcome.
This is a casual wheel-throwing class for adults who want time on the wheel, help when they need it, or a bit of studio time without signing up for a full term.
It is open to current students, past students, studio members, rusty potters, enthusiastic returners, pottery wannabes, complete beginners and the clay curious. You don't need to be a member to book.
All studio equipment and materials are included for the class, including clay, tools, slips and underglazes.
A note about finished pots
Pottery is not an instant gratification sport. Clay likes to be made, rested, trimmed, dried, fired, glazed and fired again. It is pretty high maintenance for something that starts life as mud.
If you would like to end up with a finished, glazed pot, you will usually need three separate studio sessions:
- Throwing
This is where you make your pot on the wheel. - Trimming
Once your pot has firmed up, you come back to tidy the base, refine the shape and make it look a little less like it was wrestled from a swamp. Or, if swamp-adjacent is the goal, more intentionally organic, we support both journeys.
- Glazing
After your pot has been bisque fired, you come back to decorate and glaze it. We fire it again, and let you know when it is ready to collect.
Each session is booked and paid for separately
Life happens
If you can't make it back for trimming or glazing, we may be able to finish your pot for you for an additional fee. Please contact us as soon as you can. Clay has absolutely no respect for calendars.
Casual class or Saturday beginner class?
This casual class is good if you want to keep practising, come back to the wheel, work through the full making process, or book around an irregular schedule. Absolute beginners are very welcome too, but please note that finishing a pot usually takes more than one visit.
If you'd prefer a neat little beginner package, our Saturday beginner throwing and glazing class may suit you better. That class includes one throwing session and one glazing session, and we trim your chosen pot for you in between.
Daycare for pots
We'll look after your pots between sessions. Please book your next step within 4 weeks where possible. If you need longer, just let us know so we do not send your poor little pot off to the great reclaim bucket in the sky.
Drop in if the mood takes you
You don't need to book ahead for this casual class. If there is a spot available on the day, you're welcome to drop in and get muddy. Booking ahead is still the best way to guarantee your place, but spontaneous pottery urges are very much understood.
