For Years 10–12, including HSC Body of Work support

You’ve got the vision for a ceramic Body of Work. What you may not have at school is the time, equipment or studio access to fully explore it.

For Year 12 students, this class gives you the extra time and access to the tools, techniques and studio resources needed to develop your HSC Body of Work in clay. For Years 10 and 11, it’s a chance to build the skills and experience now, so when your turn comes, you’re ready.

Students can use the term to build wheel-throwing skills, practise hand-building or sculptural techniques, test construction methods, refine forms, explore surface treatments, troubleshoot technical problems or simply spend more time developing their ceramic practice.

For HSC students, we will work alongside the direction provided by your Visual Arts teacher, adding studio access, time, equipment and specialist ceramic guidance where useful.

Where appropriate, we’ll also communicate with your teacher and can provide photographs or video of work being undertaken in the studio.

Is this for me?

This class is for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who already have some experience working with clay.

No wheel-throwing experience is required, but students should have some previous hand-building experience and be ready to work on their skills and individual projects with a little more purpose than simply seeing what the blob decides to become.

Complete beginners will be better suited to our Friday teen class.

What can I expect in class?

There will be a mix of structured teaching, individual guidance and project time.
Depending on the student’s goals, this may include:
  • Wheel throwing
  • Hand-building and sculptural techniques
  • Altering and combining forms
  • Prototypes, testing and refinement
  • Surface and decoration techniques
  • Technical problem-solving
  • Documenting experiments and progress

HSC students should bring their Visual Arts Process Diary to every class.

Why Danya?

Danya Cahalan is a practising ceramic artist with a background spanning sculpture, ceramics, teaching and studio technical work. She trained at the National Art School and holds both a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Ceramics. Her own practice moves between wheel throwing, hand-building and sculptural work, with a particular interest in form, scale, surface and what clay can be persuaded to do before gravity starts having opinions.

This mix of practical, technical and creative experience makes her particularly well suited to helping students work out how to realise an idea in clay, whether that means improving a throwing skill, choosing a construction method, testing an approach or solving the inevitable technical problem halfway through.

Materials and firing

Students will primarily use Throw’s existing studio materials and standard firing schedules.

Other clay bodies or materials may be used with prior approval. Additional firing charges may apply for oversized work or pieces requiring a firing schedule outside our standard studio firings.
