Become the Boss of the Blob

You’ve learned how to centre clay, pull a cylinder and turn a promising shape into an accidental squat bowl. Excellent. Now it’s time to get a little bossier.

Wheel Project Studio is for potters who already have the basics and want to work with more intention. Bring a goal, be it throwing larger, refining a form, making a set that actually looks related, exploring altered work, or finally getting lids to behave themselves, and spend eight weeks working towards it with Danya.

There’ll be demonstrations, individual guidance, experimentation, problem-solving and a healthy amount of making it, looking at it, changing something and making it again.

Come with a goal. Spend eight weeks developing it

Who is it for?

This class is for potters with some existing wheel experience. You should be able to:
  • Centre clay independently
  • Pull a basic cylinder
  • Trim your own work
  • Understand the usual wheel-studio workflow and terminology

As a rough guide, that’s usually around one term of wheel experience, but ability matters much more than time served.

Complete beginners will be much happier in our Wednesday night wheel class, where Danya teaches everyone from first-timers through to experienced throwers.

What will we work on?

Your goal is your own, so everyone’s eight weeks will look a little different. You might want to:
  • Throw larger or with more consistency
  • Refine a particular form
  • Develop a family of related pieces
  • Tackle lids, handles, altered forms or joined components
  • Combine thrown and hand-built techniques
  • Explore more sculptural work
  • Become more deliberate with glazing and surface
  • Solve a technical problem that has been annoying you for far too long

Danya will work with each student’s current skill level and interests, with demonstrations and exercises chosen to help the group move forward.

Expect a fair bit of make it, look at it, work out what happened, change something, make it again. This is a studio for developing skills, not a race to produce the tallest stack of pots.

Before the term starts

Danya will be in touch before Week 1 to find out what you’d like to work towards during the term and help make sure you arrive with a useful, achievable goal.

Bring a notebook or visual diary to class. It doesn’t need to be beautiful. It does need to survive eight weeks of sketches, measurements, glaze notes, brilliant ideas and occasional evidence of things going spectacularly sideways.
